I Love the Villa Women from Love Island!

Love Island is a popular dating reality TV show that originated in the UK. The show has been adapted in various countries worldwide. Love Island USA is currently airing its 6th season and has become very popular. The show typically involves a group of single contestants, known as Islanders, living together in a luxurious villa isolated from the outside world. The goal of the show is for the Islanders to find love and stay coupled up to avoid being eliminated. It is, in my opinion, the best reality TV show this summer.

Currently, the couples are facing challenges in their relationships. The men in the show were sent to Casa Amor, a nearby residence where they met new girls. The women in the villa have also met new boys. It’s heartbreaking seeing how fast the men in Casa Amor forgot about their past relationships. It’s particularly disrespectful that those in the most serious relationships were the quickest to break their promises of loyalty. Sadly, this represents how some men switch their affection as soon as they find another girl more attractive. However, I remind myself that this is a reality TV show and not a true depiction of all the men (or so I desperately hope). Back at the villa, some women are hoping their guys are staying respectful and trying to not break down in tears. Despite all the emotions, they’re each other’s emotional support.

My favorite part of the show is the women in the villa. They represent women positively. In the media and in life, women are often compared to one another, creating a sense of competition usually relative to appearance and men. This show could easily portray women negatively, but instead, it highlights their strengths and friendships. Despite inevitable arguments, the women in the villa show respect to one another. They might not always handle situations perfectly in the heat of the moment, but they make amends and move forward with more respect for each other.

For instance, Leah and Liv had a heated argument over a misunderstanding when Leah mentioned she was trying to take a backseat in voting an islander off. Leah explained that she tried to step back because the islander voted off Andrea, a girl who had stolen her partner, Rob, causing a lot of drama. Leah didn't want to have a significant influence on the decision due to this context. However, Liv felt like Leah was blaming the other girls for voting Andrea off instead of acknowledging it as a group decision. Eventually, all the girls involved in the decision came together to talk out their differences and ended the conversation with a hug.

Kaylor and Liv

Kaylor and Liv

I love seeing girls being girls during the show. One of recent favorite moments was when Liv reminds Kaylor of her worth. Kaylor has been breaking down crying over Aaron, the guy she has been coupled up with since the start of the show. She fears Aaron isn’t being as respectful of their relationship like she is. Kaylor even resorted to sleeping outside, getting bitten by mosquitos, instead of sharing a bed with another boy. Her worst fear came true when she received a video message of Aaron biting and kissing another girl at Casa Amor. Kaylor felt heartbroken, betrayed, and delusional. Liv reassured her that she isn’t delusional, and that she stayed true to her feelings based on what she was told and what she felt. Liv also claimed she is proud of how Kaylor wears her heart on her sleeve and how much she cares. These moments provide a refreshing view of reality TV that is rarely portrayed. While I watch the show, all I can think about is my closest friends and how alike we are to villa women.
